About the tier list
What is AI Tools Tier List?
AI Tools Tier List is a directory that ranks 240+ AI tools across 20 categories from S to D tier. Tiers weigh capability, usability, value for money, and how actively the tool is maintained — and every tier is published with the reasoning behind it.
How are the tiers determined?
S-tier is the best in its category and the first thing to try. A-tier is the excellent alternative when S does not fit. B-tier is good for specific needs. C-tier is average with better options available. D-tier is only worth considering when nothing else exists. Four inputs decide it: capability on the category's core job, pricing relative to what you get, how actively the tool is maintained, and adoption signal (search interest and real usage). A tier is relative to its own category, and it is a judgement on those inputs rather than a computed score.
What is the difference between S-Tier and A-Tier?
S-Tier tools demonstrate overwhelming performance and innovation in their category, making them the best choice for most use cases. A-Tier tools are also excellent but have minor drawbacks such as higher pricing, missing specific features, or slight room for improvement in user experience.
Are there free AI tools?
Yes, many AI tools offer free plans. You can check pricing information in each tool's details, categorized as Freemium (basic features free), Free (completely free), or Paid (paid only). Free plans typically have usage limits, so check each tool's official website for details.
What categories are available?
We have 20 categories including Coding (GitHub Copilot, Cursor), Image Generation (Midjourney, DALL-E), Chatbots (ChatGPT, Claude), AI Search Engine (Perplexity, SearchGPT), AI App Builder (Bolt.new, v0), AI Image Editing (Canva Magic Edit), Video Generation, Voice (ElevenLabs), Music Generation (Suno, Udio), Design (Canva AI, Figma AI), SEO Tools, Productivity Tools, Research & Analysis, Translation, Grammar Correction, Copywriting, Creative Writing, Academic Writing, Summarization, and Paraphrasing.
Can I request to add or update a tool?
Yes, we welcome requests to add new AI tools or update existing tool information. Please send the tool name, category, and a brief description to our contact at the bottom of the site, and we will review and update accordingly.
How often are tier rankings updated?
AI tools move fast, so a re-evaluation pipeline runs weekly, refreshing per-tool interest trends and the weekly LLM usage rankings. Tiers move in both directions, and every tool page shows its last re-rank date alongside recent changes.
What should I consider when choosing a tool?
Consider your use case (personal/business), budget (free/paid), required features, language support, data privacy policy, and compatible platforms. S-Tier isn't always the best choice - selecting the right tool for your specific use case is most important.
How do I know whether a tool is still worth using right now?
Check the last re-rank date and the recent-changes list at the top of every tool page. When a price rise, a shrunken free tier or stalled development is detected, the tier drops and the reason is logged. The homepage and category pages show the last update date, and the weekly report lists that week's tier moves.
Do affiliate commissions or ads influence the tiers?
No. Tiers are not for sale, and there are no paid placements or sponsored slots. Whether a tool runs an affiliate program is not a rating criterion, and every commission-earning link is labelled next to the link. Many top-tier tools have no affiliate program at all. The methodology page sets out the full rules.
